College

Residencies in colleges, universities, and conservatories may include:

Public concerts. The Winds frequently collaborate with faculty performers and college choirs, in addition to the guest artists listed on their standard touring programs. Another possibility is performing a work such as Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with a college orchestra or band.

College class lecture-demonstrations for courses in orchestration or twentieth-century techniques. Convocation performances can be organized around themes such as women composers, Latin American chamber music, etc.

Chamber music workshops. The Winds can coach a variety of small groups, including both brass and wind quintets and octets, flute or clarinet choirs and double-reed quartets; and mixed chamber ensembles including piano, voice, guitar, strings, and extra winds. Similar workshops can be presented for adult amateur performers who wish to play together and be professionally coached.

Master classes on flute, clarinet, oboe/English horn, bassoon, and French horn.  Reed classes are offered for oboe and bassoon students.

Clinics on career development such as running a private studio, how nonprofit arts groups are organized and funded, and other topics.

Workshop on music composition/composers’ forum. The Winds perform a great deal of contemporary American music and can have either their resident composer or a guest composer talk about the creative element in music.  The ensemble is available to provide readings of wind works by student composers.

Community outreach programs to reach new audiences with chamber music. Past sites have included hospitals, nursing homes and senior citizen centers, local and county parks, and even a steel mill!
