Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Winds’ residency at Carlow University! Beginning in 1978, the residency has – over the years – included not only concerts, but teaching, coaching, lectures, and hosting interns in arts management. In tribute to this long association, soprano Catherine Bomstein will perform the Winds’ setting of Carlow’s Alma Mater and a collaborative song written through one of the Winds’ music education programs, by R. James Whipple and then-eighth grader Jessica Malivuk.

The Winds are one of the few American chamber ensembles that perform harmoniemusik, groups with winds in pairs. Enjoy the wonderful Rondino by the youthful Beethoven and a recently published major work by a newly-discovered French Romantic, Théodore Gouvy.

A special treat is the unknown winds and harp version of Charles Tomlinson Griffes’ Tone-Pictures, Op. 5.  Originally for piano, Griffes made this instrumental version for nine winds and harp for the ensemble of the famous flutist, George Barrére.  It’s virtually the only piece of true Impressionist music in the wind literature, and this will be the first Pittsburgh performance.

PROGRAM:

Ludwig van Beethoven: Rondino (1793)
Charles Griffes: Tone Pictures, Op. 5 (1915)
. . . modern premiere of winds and harp version
Théodore Gouvy: Octet, Op. 71 (1879) – Pittsburgh premiere
Franz Danzi: Quintet in B-flat, Op. 56 No. 1
Jessica Malivuk & R. James Whipple: Angels Sing (2005)
Lively/Whipple: Carlow University Alma Mater
